Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which happens to everyone every day, for example when we awaken from sleep feeling hazy and not fully awake, is called the hypnopompic state, and when we are tired and about to fall asleep, again not fully awake, is called the hypnogogic state. Other examples are, when reading with mind fully absorbed in a book, it is often unaware of anything else happening around in the environment. Drivers when travelling a familiar route, sometimes turn a corner or navigate a roundabout without remembering, this is due to the subconscious mind 'kicking in' as if on auto pilot.

Hypnosis, therefore, is a naturally occurring state of consciousness you will be familiar with, and experience many times during the day. Day dreaming and reverie are also altered states of awareness - hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy can be used in healing many situations. It can be used to help heal physical illness and emotional difficulties. This works through the use of hypnosis which is an altered state of consciousness that is naturally occurring to us all during our daily lives. The therapist induces hypnosis and by accessing the unconscious or subconscious mind can speak directly to the mind to aid healing.
